Police are searching for a U.S. Postal Service driver after a 66-year-old man was struck and killed in Hell’s Kitchen Saturday morning.
The crash happened just after 5:30 a.m. on Ninth Avenue between West 54th and West 55th streets when the 66-year-old man was crossing Ninth Avenue mid-block when he was struck by a USPS truck.
The driver did not remain at the scene, according to police, and the victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.
No arrests have been made.
In the hellish early hours of Saturday, a second fatal hit-and-run unfolded in the Bronx, compounding the city’s deadly overnight toll.
The incident happened near College Avenue and East 166th Street in Morrisania, when the unidentified man was involved in a physical altercation with another unidentified person in front of 1059 College Avenue around 3:47 a.m.
Following the altercation, the man was seen lying unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway at the northwest corner of College Avenue and East 166th Street.
About ten minutes after the assault, tragedy compounded.
A preliminary investigation found that the man was struck by a white BMW SUV traveling eastbound on East 166th Street, and the driver of the BMW did not remain at the scene.
The nightmare deepened when police arrived.
Police say a marked NYPD vehicle, also traveling eastbound on East 166th Street at approximately 12 mph, subsequently struck the man as he remained in the roadway.
The officer driving the NYPD vehicle remained at the scene and rendered aid.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His identity is not yet known.
Police say the man was assaulted by another unidentified person around 3:47 a.m., leaving him unconscious in the street. Within minutes, the white BMW SUV struck him as he lay defenseless in the roadway. That collision resulted in his death.
When police arrived, their marked vehicle traveling at a low speed also struck the victim, who remained in the road. The officer immediately stopped, stayed at the scene, and began administering first aid. Paramedics transported the man to Lincoln Hospital, but he could not be saved.
The Bronx driver of the white BMW remains at large, with no arrests yet.
