Violent Paris protests draw 70,000 as Molotov cocktails are hurled at police and flags are burned

French authorities arrested 511 protesters nationwide after violent clashes erupted across multiple cities Saturday, with an officer engulfed in flames by a Molotov cocktail and luxury stores looted amid demonstrations that drew an estimated 320,000 people.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, 57, threatened a forceful response as his ministry deployed 70,000 police officers across the country. “We are fully prepared for those looking for confrontation,” he said. The French government specifically blamed far-left extremist groups for what it called an “extraordinary” level of violence, and labeled the attack on the Paris officer as “attempted murder.”

The most intense fighting unfolded in Paris, where at least 70,000 gathered for a march that began at Porte de Bagnolet and exploded into chaos at its endpoint, Porte de Charenton. Police attempted to disperse crowds with tear gas, water cannons and mortar fire, but protesters responded by hurling projectiles back at officers.

An incendiary device struck one officer directly, setting his leg ablaze in a moment captured in startling images before colleagues extinguished the flames. Several other officers were injured by the flames and forced to retreat from their positions, some taking cover behind the gates of a school where they also evacuated students who had barricaded themselves inside.

“Our unit was attacked violently by several rioters in a very sudden way,” the unnamed officer said in a phone call with French channel LCI. “The intensity was extraordinary, there wasn’t any kind of gradual buildup to the violence … it degenerated.”

Police identified “a hard core of several hundred rioters” at the rear of the Paris march as the source of the worst attacks, according to Le Monde. The National Gendarmerie addressed the violence on X, writing: “Unacceptable violence is being committed against law enforcement.”

The unrest spread well beyond the capital despite police efforts to keep protesters away from the city center. Hundreds marched to the historic Place de la Bastille in violation of a protest ban there, where police charged at demonstrators on foot and beat several with batons as tear gas filled the air and fires raged. One protester’s back was reportedly left bleeding from the baton strikes.

In Marseilles, roughly 10,000 demonstrators turned out as rioters broke into private homes, surveillance cameras were torched and more projectiles rained down on police. Social media footage showed about a dozen demonstrators entering an apartment building and rushing up the staircase. In Lyon, militants burned American and Israeli flags on a tram shelter roof while a crowd chanted “Israel, assassins” and three rioters in all black with goggles and face coverings stomped on the flags before igniting them.

Bordeaux saw 11,000 protesters gather at Place de la Victoire, where demonstrators marching against the rising cost of living attacked a piñata of President Emmanuel Macron designed with a pointy nose and mouth stuffed with cash. A protester in black wearing a boar facemask crushed the effigy as the crowd cheered and chanted “Macron, resignation,” sending fake banknotes raining down, according to social media video shared by newspaper Le Figaro. A Tesla car was also set ablaze in Paris, and some protesters dressed as clowns and witches for the Halloween-themed march shined lasers at officers in an attempt to blind them.

Right-wing politician Matthieu Valet, a French member of the European Parliament, condemned the violence sharply on X. “These criminals want to see the blood of police officers spilled, and they’re relentless about it,” he wrote. “Behind every uniform, there’s a life, a family. How many tragedies will it take for this to stop?”

The unrest was not confined to France. In Frankfurt, Germany, protesters pelted police with stones and firecrackers, injuring several officers. Hamburg demonstrators set barricades alight, while a march in Cologne was shut down entirely after stone throwing and fireworks. In Tirana, Albania, masked assailants hurled Molotov cocktails and stones at police, set trash bins ablaze and used slingshots to fire rocks as police responded with water cannons.

The Paris march that degenerated into the worst violence began as a coordinated demonstration before the hard-core faction at its rear broke away to attack officers with projectiles including the Molotov cocktail that set the officer’s leg on fire. The Halloween timing lent a surreal element to the clashes, with costumed protesters mixing among the militants as police struggled to contain the spreading disorder across multiple flashpoints in the capital and beyond.

Luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Apple were targeted by looters in Paris, prompting the companies to hire their own private security guards to protect their storefronts amid the chaos.

The US Embassy issued warnings encouraging Americans to avoid cities across France as the riots continued to ravage the nation.
