Watch Chris Brown Repeatedly Bash Producer Over the Head With Bottle in London Club as He Avoids Jail Time

Chris Brown has received a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to a 2023 nightclub assault in London.

The 36-year-old R&B singer appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday alongside his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 39, where both men admitted to affray over the February 2023 attack on producer Abe Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair. Judge Tony Baumgartner handed Brown an eight-month suspended sentence rather than immediate prison time, while Akinlolu received a suspended sentence on the same charge.

Newly obtained footage shows Brown grabbing Diaw’s hood and striking him repeatedly over the head with a tequila bottle on the packed dance floor. Akinlolu is also seen grabbing Diaw and attempting to punch him during the melee. The scuffle continued into another room where both men threw additional punches before others intervened to break up the fight.

“You, Brown, were holding a tequila bottle in your right hand when you reached Diaw [and] you struck him to the left side of his head whilst holding his hood,” Judge Baumgartner said during sentencing.

“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous. It carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained,” the judge continued.

Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC told the court that Brown played a “leading role” in what unfolded during a frenzied 20-second period around 3 a.m. She described the weapon as a “heavy square-shaped tequila bottle.” Diaw suffered head and knee injuries requiring hospital treatment, and an MRI scan taken in early March 2023 revealed a “high grade injury to a ligament on the inner side of the left knee.”

The criminal case moved slowly. Brown was not arrested until March 2025, two years after the incident, when he was detained at the five-star Lowry Hotel on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He initially denied attacking Diaw and posted £5 million ($6.75 million) bail before eventually entering his guilty plea.

The producer had already taken civil action against Brown by that point. In October 2023, eight months after the nightclub assault, Diaw filed a lawsuit claiming the “Kiss Kiss” singer had “inflicted severe and lasting injuries” after “beating him over the head” with a bottle of Don Julio 1942. The producer alleged the attack left him unconscious for approximately 30 seconds.

Brown’s Monday court appearance came as a surprise; he was not expected to attend the sentencing hearing in person. The suspended sentence means he will avoid prison unless he violates specific conditions set by the court.

The 2023 nightclub incident is only the latest in a lengthy pattern of legal troubles for the Virginia-born singer spanning two decades. In July, he was ordered to pay his former housekeeper $13 million after she was attacked by his 200-pound dog in 2020. His most widely known legal case dates to 2009, when he pleaded guilty to felony assault for beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna before that year’s Grammy Awards ceremony.

Brown’s career has continued despite the recurring controversies. The “Forever” singer has maintained an active recording and touring schedule throughout the legal proceedings, with his commercial success largely undiminished by the pattern of violent incidents that has shadowed his public life since his breakthrough as a teenage star.
