Woody Allen Announces Retirement From Filmmaking

Woody Allen, the legendary director, has stated that his upcoming picture, his 50th, will be his final.

The Annie Hall creator confessed that he wanted to focus on creating a novel and retire from filmmaking.

“My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing,” Allen told the publication. Allen’s upcoming film, Wasp 22, is set to start production in Europe this year.

Allen, 86, has received 12 Academy Awards for his work on films such as Midnight in Paris, Blue Jasmine, Annie Hall, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and many others.

Allen’s career, however, has not been without controversy. Dylan Farrow, his adoptive daughter, and her mother, Mia Farrow, have accused him of sexually assaulting her when she was seven years old. Farrow first made her accusation public in 1992, detailed in the four-part docuseries Allen v. Farrow in 2021.

Allen has consistently rejected molestation charges against Dylan. After having an affair, the filmmaker married Soon-Yi Previn, one of Mia’s adoptive stepdaughters.

Allen confirmed his intentions to break away from filmmaking during an Instagram Live conversation with Alec Baldwin in June, claiming he had “one or two more” projects planned.

“A lot of the thrill is gone,” Allen said of modern-day movie releases. “Now you do a movie, and you get a couple of weeks in a movie house, and then it goes to streaming or pay-per-view. It’s not the same. It’s not as enjoyable to me.”

In response to the claims leveled against him, Allen stated that he had “zero interest in anyone’s judgments and sanctimonious posts.”
