This Wedding Dress Made From A World War II Escape Map Now Has A New Story To Tell

This woman’s wedding dress may look like an abstraction of lines and squiggles, but it’s actually a print of a map.

Stunning bride and print maker Hester Cox had her wedding dress custom made by British artist, Sara Jane Murray.

Sara owns Home Front Vintage, a business that repurposes World War II maps into crafts, accessories, and clothing.

Hester asked Sara to make a wedding dress using her signature material.

But Hester’s dress isn’t made from just any random WWII map — it’s an “escape and evade route” map, specifically from the Scandinavian region.

During the second world war, escape maps were used to help pilots navigate their way home.

“These maps have incredible stories. They’d been hidden in boot heels or in place of the lead of a pencil so the enemy wouldn’t discover them. Sharing these stories is about putting a marker in the sand so we remember what happened,” Sara shared.

This map now tells a different story, in a modern setting.

It’s Hester’s way of symbolizing that after years of searching, she’s finally found her way home.
