We all love a good treasure hunt, so when Imgur user Branik12 stumbled upon a mysterious old box whilst remodeling his house, he decided to share the whole adventure (and his unbelievable discovery) on Reddit.
He wrote, “So my family and I have been living in our house we bought some years back. The house was built in the late 40s … I had remodeled everything on the first and second floors when it came time to remodel the basement.”
As they were tearing down parts of the roof to redecorate, Branik12 came across some scribbles all over the wall. Nothing too exciting yet.
Until he spotted an old-fashioned, small suitcase jammed into the ceiling.
In the post, Branik12 says that he replaced the box, after excitedly grabbing it out and cleaning it, to photograph it’s location for the Imgur album — that’s why the box looks so clean in this photo.
He pulled it out and decided to unwrap the string and crack open the mysterious box, describing it as “kinda heavy”.
The contents were wrapped in an ancient newspaper, which was dated March 25, 1951. Branik12 guessed the box must’ve been hidden around that time.
And as he unwrapped the paper, Branik12 discovered a bunch of dollars.
“There’s money in here! I am guessing a thousand or more!” he wrote excitedly, “We are freaking out at this point. This doesn’t happen to us! What do we do? Where are the cameras?”
But it wasn’t a hoax, and there was even more cash stashed in the next parcels.
“The second package didn’t have any twenties. It was all fifties! What is going on here! This is out of control!”
After tracking down a lawyer to check they could claim the money (they could!) and identifying the rarer notes, including nearly-uncirculated star notes and gold certificate bills, Branik12 and his wife planned how they were going to spend the thousand-dollar discovery.
“We are boring people and have been dumping our extra money to pay off our mortgage and that is where this money will go, too.”
But the house had yet more secrets to reveal, as weeks later the couple continued their DIY and — you guessed it — came upon a second, identical, box.
Branik12 said his wife was at work, so he cleaned up the box and waited for her to return so they could open the box together.
And, yep, unbelievably the case contained even more cash, bringing the total money discovered in their home to a whopping $45,000.
Branik12 explained: “The notes of value were sold, about 20 had value over the face value plus grading cost, and about 10 were worth 4 times face value.”
The incredibly lucky couple are looking forward to completely paying off their mortgage early and moving to the country. Now excuse us while we go treasure hunting in the attic…
