Avicii’s cause of death has now been revealed—and it’s as devastating as we all feared.
It’s reported that the 28-year-old cut himself with a broken wine bottle, leading to blood loss that ultimately caused his death.
Avicii—whose real name was Tim Bergling—died while on holiday in Oman on April 20. He was found with wounds on his neck and wrists.
Days after the world-famous DJ’s death, his family released a statement that alluded to suicide.
“Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions.”
“An over-achieving perfectionist who traveled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress. When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music,” they added.
“He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace.”
Weeks after his death, it was found that Avicii was an extremely generous giver: he donated millions of dollars to charities aimed at ending world hunger.
Talking about his charitable efforts in a 2013 interview, Avicii said: “I discovered when I started making money that I didn’t really need it. When you have such an excess of money you don’t need, the most sensible, most human and completely obvious thing is to give to people in need.”
