Mariah Carey has revealed that both her mother and sister passed away on the same day over the recent weekend.
The singer announced the deaths of her mom, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, to People magazine.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Carey stated in an exclusive statement to People.
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” she added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
There are no additional details about the causes of Patricia and Alison’s deaths available at this time.
Patricia, like her daughter Mariah, was musically talented and trained as an opera singer at Juilliard. She was also a vocal coach.
Carey has often credited her mother for her vocal prowess, though she has acknowledged that their relationship was complex.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the Grammy-winning singer wrote, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”
“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,” she continued. “A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
In her memoir, Carey also dedicated a part to her mother, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could.”
“I will love you the best I can, always,” she added.
