Who’s Set to Play Spidey in Spider-Man 4 After Major Update

Spider-Man 4 has received a significant update and appears to be finally gaining traction.

Marvel is currently juggling numerous upcoming projects, many of which were highlighted at this year’s Comic-Con.

One of the most notable announcements was Robert Downey Jr’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where the Oppenheimer star will portray Dr. Doom.

At D23, fans were also given an exclusive look at an unreleased Daredevil trailer, indicating that the series is definitely not suitable for children.

However, very little information had been shared regarding the eagerly awaited Spider-Man 4 movie – until now.

According to reports, Destin Daniel Cretton, the filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in early discussions to direct the film, taking over from Jon Watts who helmed the previous three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies.

While it remains unclear if formal negotiations are currently happening between Marvel, Sony, and Cretton, Deadline reports that Cretton appears to be a fitting choice given his prior experience with Marvel projects.

Cretton had initially been chosen to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but it was reported last year that he stepped away from the project following a change in the film’s direction.

The movie, now titled Avengers: Doomsday, will instead be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

As for who will don the Spider-Man suit in the next installment of the franchise, the Hollywood Reporter indicates that Tom Holland is set to return.

Deadline notes that both Holland and Zendaya ‘have been in touch with execs and producers about the development of the film’.

UNILAD has reached out to Sony and Marvel for comments, as well as representatives for Holland.

With the Spider-Man movies having catapulted Holland to global fame, the 28-year-old actor has expressed immense gratitude towards the films, saying he ‘owes his life and career’ to them.

When asked earlier this year if he would be interested in starring in Spider-Man 4, Holland told Deadline: “The simple answer is that I’ll always want to do Spider-Man films.

“I’ll always want to do more.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Garfield has commented on rumors suggesting his return for Spider-Man 4, after reprising his role as Peter Parker in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Regarding online speculation about his involvement in the new film, Garfield told Indie Wire recently: “I mean, like the internet is a big place. I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid.”

Yet Marvel fans will recall that Garfield strongly denied his participation in No Way Home in the lead-up to its release, casting doubt on whether his current statements can be taken at face value…
