Netflix has just released a chilling paranormal series as Ryan Murphy’s Ed Gein Story captures the attention of viewers on the platform.
As the spooky season approaches, Netflix continues to provide captivating and haunting tales that resonate long after viewing.
Renowned horror director James Wan, known for the Saw franchise and the initial Conjuring films, serves as an executive producer, promising a thrilling experience.
The Monster: The Ed Gein Story is currently topping the streamer’s global charts, even though it hasn’t universally captivated audiences.
Featuring Charlie Hunnam, this eight-part series delves into the real-life story of the infamous Wisconsin serial killer, often referred to as the Butcher of Plainfield.
Gein was notorious for his gruesome murders of two women and for transforming his home into a macabre scene through grave robbing and body dismemberment during the 1940s and 50s.
The shocking nature of his crimes was unveiled following the disappearance of Bernice Worden in 1957.
Authorities conducting a search of Gein’s residence discovered Worden’s decapitated body hanging from the ceiling.
Additionally, they uncovered that Gein had been fashioning clothing from human skin.
Despite receiving a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 23 percent and criticisms over its accuracy, the series has generated significant buzz and is currently the most-watched show on Netflix.
Netflix is further exploring the ‘real life’ supernatural with the release of a five-part series, True Haunting.
Debuting on Tuesday, October 7, the show features ‘immersive reenactments and present-day interviews’, as described in its synopsis, chronicling ‘paranormal encounters from the viewpoint of those who experienced them’.
The initial three episodes, all titled ‘Eerie Hall’, take us back to 1984, where college student Chris DiCesare believes a mysterious entity is haunting his dorm at the State University of New York College.
During the series, renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren give a lecture at Geneseo, and Lorraine notably refrains from shaking DiCesare’s hand, adding a spooky twist.
The narrative for the last two episodes, ‘This House Murdered Me’, aligns with typical horror movie themes.
Set in 2004, it follows Utah couple April Miller and Matt Wilson as they move into their dream home in Salt Lake, only to confront its haunting history, challenging them to protect their home.
John Anderson of The Wall Street Journal remarked on True Haunting: “Neither story is new, nor do they differ greatly from other tales of paranormal outrage. This retelling is all about style.”
Karina Adelgaard of Heaven of Horror shared her thoughts: “This is far from the first Netflix docudrama in the paranormal horror niche, but it just might be the best so far.”
True Haunting is now available for streaming on Netflix.
