Major Shift in New York Parking Regulations Amid Massive Snowstorm

New York’s parking regulation has been temporarily halted due to the season’s first significant snowfall.

Long Island and nearby New Jersey experienced up to eight inches of snow, while Queens saw approximately 4.6 inches, according to the Weather Channel.

The severe weather conditions disrupted daily activities, leading to airport delays and the closure of schools.

Numerous cities across the Northeastern states experienced power outages as a result of the storm.

In response to the situation, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) decided to suspend a specific parking rule that affects commuters.

On Monday (December 15) and again today (December 16), the regular Alternate Side Parking (ASP) rules were put on hold.

This rule restricts parking to one side of the street on particular days or times, mainly to facilitate street sweepers, snowplows, or maintenance crews in clearing the roads.

The City of New York website provides details: “ASP rules are posted on signs with a ‘P’ crossed by a broom and indicate the days and times parking isn’t allowed.

“When ASP is in effect, you can’t park on the side of the street that is being cleaned.”

It also notes: “The rules apply for the entire time posted on the sign, even if a street sweeper has passed.”

Typically, drivers who violate this rule face fines ranging from $45 to $65, depending on the borough.

The NYC DOT explained that ASP rules were suspended on Monday and Tuesday to aid in snow clearing operations.

This allows drivers to park on both sides of the designated roads without incurring fines.

However, other parking regulations, such as pay meters, resident permits, and time limits, remain in effect.

Normal ASP rules are anticipated to resume on Wednesday (December 17).

Inclement weather isn’t the sole reason for ASP suspensions.

Throughout the year, ASP is paused for a total of 42 days, accommodating legal and religious holidays.

Upcoming suspensions include Christmas Day, followed by New Year’s Day and Three Kings’ Day on January 6.

The remaining scheduled ASP suspension days for 2026 are as follows:
