Robert Pattinson has spoken about his past body odor, revealing he had a ‘very strange’ smell for several years.
The 39-year-old actor, known for being a Dior Homme fragrance ambassador, admitted that his personal scent wasn’t always pleasant.
In 2020, Pattinson mentioned to Allure that many people commented that he ‘smelled like a crayon’. Crayons possess a distinctive, waxy aroma, often described as ‘earthy’.
“Lots of people tell me I smell like a crayon,” Pattinson shared at the time. When questioned if it was similar to being ‘made of wax’, he replied: “Yes! Like I’m embalmed.”
During a recent GQ interview, Pattinson updated on his body scent, saying that his body chemistry has ‘changed’ and he no longer has a waxy smell.
“My body chemistry has changed. It’s very strange. But I 100% used to smell exactly like a crayon,” the Die My Love actor told the magazine.
He then expressed his ‘weird’ theory that people become ‘less scented’ with age: “And it’s weird, you become less scented as you get older, I think. I don’t really notice my smell anymore. I used to have a very particular, pronounced smell. A crayon-y one.
“Before that, it was quite a kind of vicious, vicious scent. And then something, I think, when it became crayon-y, it was like something died.”
The Twilight actor added: “I guess the seven-year cycle…. Maybe I was smelling of crayons when one self died, and when a new self was born, it was less scented.”
Reddit users reacted with surprise to his revelation, with one saying: “Thank you for sharing. Now take it back.”
Another commented they ‘wish I didn’t know about it’, while a third remarked: “Some things don’t have to be said out loud.”
However, some appreciated his honesty, with one person noting that celebrities ‘presenting themselves as human beings with human ‘flaws’ is basically a healthy development’, adding: “Sure, there are some things some celebrities are maybe a bit more open about than we need them to be, but “I have a human body that does weird human body things” is a fairly benign thing to put out there, imo.”
Pattinson also mentioned that he had temporarily lost his sense of smell and currently doesn’t perceive much scent at all.
Recently, he discovered the ‘newborn smell’ after the birth of his daughter with partner Suki Waterhouse in March 2024.
He told Vogue last year: “I remember people used to be like ‘oh, don’t you like the smell of babies, but I thought they were just smelling the baby powder.
“But then I had a baby, and I was like ‘my baby smells incredible.’ There’s something there, I can identify her. She doesn’t smell like other babies.”
