Danny Glover has shared in an emotional interview on TODAY that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
The Lethal Weapon star said he received the diagnosis in 2022 but chose to speak publicly about it now as part of his effort to be open about his health and his future. Glover, who was born on July 22, 1946, is now 79 years old.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and affects millions of Americans. Recent estimates from the Alzheimer’s Association put the number of people age 65 and older living with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States at more than 7 million, with the total expected to keep rising as the population ages.
During his conversation with NBC’s Lester Holt, Glover reflected on living with the condition and said he is approaching the diagnosis with honesty and perspective. While the disease can affect memory, thinking and daily functioning over time, many people continue to lead active lives for years after diagnosis with the right medical care and support.
Glover has long been known not only for his film career, which also includes roles in The Color Purple, Witness and Predator 2, but also for his work as an activist and humanitarian. His decision to speak publicly about Alzheimer’s adds his voice to a growing number of public figures helping to raise awareness of the disease, its symptoms and the importance of early evaluation.
For families facing an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, experts say it is important to follow up with a doctor, discuss treatment and care options, and build a support plan early.
