Governor Andy Beshear broke the news to a room of Democrats that a mass shooting had unfolded blocks from their dinner.
The shooting erupted around 6:45 p.m. Saturday in Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, where an outdoor concert was underway, according to the Lexington Herald Leader. One person was killed and four others were wounded, including a 14-year-old and a 4-year-old. The two children and two adult survivors were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Beshear, 46, was delivering a speech at the Kentucky Democratic Party’s Moving Forward Together dinner at the Hyatt Regency roughly a mile away when the gunfire began. He paused his remarks to address the violence unfolding nearby.
“Before I continue, I do need to let y’all know we do have some tough news tonight,” Beshear said.
“About a mile and a half from here, we’ve had a shooting actually since we started this dinner,” he continued.
“We have five people that I think received injuries and probably have one deceased.”
The Lexington Police Department said around 10:00 p.m. Local time that the investigation remained active. “No further details are available at this time,” the department said in a statement.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers appeared at a press conference later Saturday evening and made a direct appeal to the public for prevention.
“If you know somebody who might be inclined to use a weapon, please do anything you can do to let us know before something happens. Please let us know,” Weathers said.
The park shooting was one of four mass shootings to strike the United States in a 24-hour span on Saturday. The others occurred in Michigan, Virginia, and Chicago. In Chicago, a drive-by shooting killed four people and wounded 14 others after a party at a restaurant. In Michigan, a shooting and fire at a church left four dead and eight wounded, CBC reported. In Virginia, a shooting at a Walmart distribution center killed one person and wounded four others.
The Charles Young Park violence came on a weekend already marked by gun violence across multiple states. The Michigan church shooting in particular drew national attention, with police confirming the suspect opened fire before setting the building ablaze. The Chicago restaurant shooting followed a private party and represented one of the deadliest mass shootings of the year in that city.
In the viral moment that preceded the governor’s address, Beshear had been outlining his party’s agenda for the upcoming election cycle when he learned of the shooting through his staff. His decision to announce the tragedy from the podium rather than continue with prepared remarks underscored the proximity of the violence to the political gathering. The Hyatt Regency sits in the heart of downtown Lexington, a short drive from the park where families had gathered for the concert.
No suspect had been publicly identified by Lexington police as of late Saturday, and authorities did not release the name of the deceased victim or a possible motive. The investigation remained ongoing with detectives processing the park scene and interviewing witnesses who had been at the concert.
The four surviving victims, including the two children, were expected to recover from their injuries, according to initial medical reports. The ages of the two adult victims were not immediately disclosed.
The Kentucky State Police had not issued a separate statement on the shooting as of Saturday night, and it remained unclear whether state or federal authorities would join the Lexington police investigation.
