Shelley Fabares has died at 82 after a brief illness, her family confirmed.
The actress, best known for starring roles in “The Donna Reed Show” and “Coach,” passed away on Saturday. She was 82.
“To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort,” her family wrote in a statement, describing her as a “devoted wife” and “loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor, and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her.”
“She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for,” the statement continued.
“For millions, Shelley was a beloved actress whose work became part of the fabric of American television and film,” her family added, highlighting her long-standing career as Mary Stone in “The Donna Reed Show” from 1958 to 1965.
Fabares landed the role of Mary Stone, the eldest daughter on the ABC sitcom, when she was just 14 years old. The series ran for eight seasons and 275 episodes, making her a household name during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Beyond television, Fabares built a parallel career in music and film. She released her chart-topping hit “Johnny Angel” in 1962, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She also starred opposite Elvis Presley in three feature films: the 1965 movie “Girl Happy,” the 1966 movie “Spinout,” and the 1967 flick “Clambake.”
Decades later, Fabares found renewed success on television as Christine Armstrong in the ABC sitcom “Coach,” appearing alongside Jerry Van Dyke and Craig T. Nelson. The series ran from 1989 to 1997, earning her two Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
“She brought talent, intelligence, and warmth to every performance,” her family wrote.
“But to those closest to her, her greatest legacy was personal: the love she gave so freely, the friendships she treasured, and the family bonds she held dear,” they continued.
The family concluded that they will miss Fabares “deeply,” “not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives.”
Fabares’ cause of death has yet to be revealed. She previously underwent a liver transplant in 2000 following an autoimmune hepatitis diagnosis.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Farrell, whom she wed in 1984, and her stepchildren. Farrell, 86, is best known for his role as Captain B.J. Hunnicutt on “M*A*S*H.”
Fabares’ last project was as the voice of Martha Kent in the 2006 animated project, “Superman: Brainiac Attacks.”
