Sandra Bullock has revealed her 12-year-old daughter Laila is pushing her back into the dating pool with some very specific requirements.
“She said I needed to date, but only someone where they can get stuff,” the Oscar winner, 62, shared on Thursday’s episode of the “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce” podcast. “So I said, ‘What? A rapper? A basketball player? That’s the parameters?’ She’s like, ‘Yeah.’ I went, ‘Oh.'”
Bullock, who adopted both Laila and son Louis, 16, in her late 40s, has centered her life around motherhood since her longtime partner Bryan Randall died in August 2023 at age 57. The photographer had battled ALS privately, a secret he had asked her to keep even as she began grieving him long before his physical passing.
“I started grieving [Randall] four years” before he died, Bullock disclosed last month on the “SmartLess” podcast. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”
On the Kelce podcast, the “Gravity” star explained her parenting philosophy as a single mother. “I just lean into who they are. I meet them exactly where they are,” she stated. “I’m getting something amazing — even if I’m crying on the inside.”
That commitment to her children now governs every professional decision. Bullock confirmed she only accepts acting roles that align with her kids’ schedules, which was the case for the upcoming “Practical Magic” sequel. “To me, being a mom is everything,” she explained. “My job is great, [but] my kids are my everything. So if it doesn’t work for them and my time with them, I’m not doing it.”
She continued, “I’m lucky that I’m one of the moms that gets to be with her kids all of the time. I have no desire to leave my kids.”
The actress also admitted she’s “glad” that her children remain unimpressed by her Hollywood stature. “People who do jobs at the office everyday, the kids don’t care,” she pointed out, joking that her kids “knew about craft service” when she was on set. “That’s what my job was. A place that had extensive craft service.”
Bullock largely withdrew from public life after Randall’s death, stepping back from acting to focus on raising Louis and Laila. She broke her silence about his “traumatic” passing during the “SmartLess” interview, where she described the weight of carrying his secret illness while continuing to care for him and their family.
The “Practical Magic 2” star has made only select appearances since then, including a recent star-studded Lakers game that marked a rare public outing. Her gradual return to the spotlight has come on her own terms and her own timeline, with her children always at the center of those choices.
Bullock and Randall had exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony before his ALS diagnosis, according to previous reports, building a family life that she has worked to preserve since his death. Her daughter’s blunt dating advice suggests the household has begun adjusting to a new chapter, even if Bullock herself seemed caught off guard by the parameters.
