Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about her “heady” romance with Brad Pitt on Tuesday’s “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, calling their split “hard” and admitting she was “so bummed” when it ended.
Paltrow, 53, joined co-hosts Benny Blanco, 38, Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco for the episode, where she reflected on the relationship that began in 1994 when the two met as co-stars on “Se7en.” The pair got engaged two years later before breaking things off in 1997. She recalled being just 22 to Pitt’s 31 at the time, and described their connection as “love at first sight,” which she called a “pretty awesome” and “really fun” experience.
“He was so beautiful,” Paltrow gushed on the show.
The Oscar winner confirmed the romance marked her first in the public eye, and she found the attention overwhelming. She was “getting famous on [her] own” while simultaneously becoming “famous as [Pitt’s] girlfriend,” she remembered. The press scrutiny added an extra layer of difficulty to the breakup.
“The press aspect and all that makes it feel larger than life in a way,” she added. “You have to carry this faux cultural importance piece, this extra burden and extra shame that it didn’t work out.”
Paltrow attributed part of the strain to their schedules. “I was just young, and we were working all over different parts of the world,” she said of the split.
Despite the breakup, she holds no ill will toward Pitt, 62. “He’s a great guy, and I love him to this day,” she told the co-hosts. “He’s a friend.”
Blanco quipped during the conversation that Pitt and Paltrow eventually experienced a “conscious uncoupling,” nodding to the phrase Paltrow famously used to describe her 2014 separation from ex-husband Chris Martin. The Coldplay frontman, 49, and Paltrow were married for 10 years and share daughter Apple, 22, and son Moses, 20.
Paltrow also discussed one difficult early moment with Martin during Tuesday’s sitdown. She worried a “tense” brunch with their two children would “go off the rails,” but said she and Martin “hugged, fist bumped” and worked through it. The exes “stayed a family” despite “not being a couple,” she noted.
Blanco joked that Paltrow “only date[s] guys named Brad” so she doesn’t “mess up the names” — a reference to her current husband, producer Brad Falchuk.
Last year, Paltrow made headlines for clarifying she never harbors “what if” thoughts about past romantic choices. “I really embrace the roads that I take,” she said in March 2025. “I almost never go back and noodle about choices.”
In 2023, she also compared Pitt’s bedroom skills to those of another ex, Ben Affleck, during an appearance on “Call Her Daddy.” She praised Pitt’s “major chemistry” and Affleck’s “technical excellen[ce].”
Paltrow and Pitt’s engagement in the mid-1990s made them one of Hollywood’s most photographed couples, with their matching haircuts and red-carpet appearances becoming tabloid fixtures of the era. The relationship unfolded as both actors were ascending to major stardom — she fresh off an Oscar win for “Shakespeare in Love” and he becoming one of the industry’s leading men.
The “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast episode marks one of Paltrow’s most direct reflections on the romance in recent years.
