Debby Ryan has spoken publicly for the first time about the traumatic brain injury that sidelined her for half a year.
The former Disney Channel star, 33, detailed the lasting fallout from multiple concussions during an appearance on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, explaining how the cumulative damage reshaped her daily existence and forced her to adapt to permanent neurological changes. Ryan, who led four seasons of Jessie and starred as Bailey Pickett on The Suite Life on Deck, traced the crisis to her fifth concussion — an incident involving what she described as “sustained shaking over a minute of time,” distinct from the isolated physical blows that caused her earlier head injuries.
“I had a pretty crazy life-altering brain injury a few years ago,” Ryan said. “And I was out of commission for like six months, and I went to this neurological rehab for like six months.”
The aftermath plunged her into what she called a “hellish” escalation of chronic migraines and acute sensory overload. Ordinary environments became overwhelming as her brain struggled to process visual and auditory input. “Quite often the world is really loud. It’s really too bright. There’s a lot going on,” she explained. “The visual data that I’m taking in can be so distracting and so loud… Then, with the migraines—which are significantly worsened by that—it sort of is too much.”
Ryan found that shutting out stimulation became essential to basic functioning. “Quite often I can see better and think better with my eyes closed,” she noted.
Her path back involved intensive conventional therapy and an experimental procedure she characterized as “fringe science treatment” that felt “really sci-fi and crazy.” The intervention helped her get what she termed “back online,” though she was direct about the limits of her progress. “There are some things that just did not come back,” Ryan acknowledged, describing her life now as divided between “pre-incident Debby and post-incident Debby.”
The actress credited her support system with sustaining her through the uncertainty, particularly her husband, Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun. The couple, who welcomed daughter Felix last year, navigated the rehabilitation together as Ryan confronted the possibility that some changes might never reverse. “I feel really fortunate that I have an amazing team of people around me who sort of reminded me who I am and was, and also held a lot of space for that to change, potentially permanently, and love me through that,” she shared.
Ryan has continued building her screen career since the injury, starring in the Netflix dark comedy Insatiable and taking roles in the 2026 drama The Sun Never Sets alongside Dakota Fanning and the upcoming thriller Famous.
