Tom Cruise Calls Taylor Swift a ‘Genius’ and Reveals Their Chiefs Game Conversation

Tom Cruise has broken his silence on what he and Taylor Swift discussed during their viral NFL booth hangout.

The “Mission: Impossible” star, 62, appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” this week and revealed that Swift, 35, spent much of the Kansas City Chiefs’ September 14 season opener teaching him about football. The pair were photographed deep in conversation at Arrowhead Stadium, where Swift was supporting boyfriend Travis Kelce.

“She was bringing the football. First of all, she’s a genius,” Cruise told Fallon.

The actor explained that it had been years since his last NFL experience. “I hadn’t been to a football game since pre-COVID, where I was working and everything,” he said. “So to get to hang out there and have that moment, it was a lot of fun … she knows her stuff.”

Cruise added that Swift herself admitted she came to the sport relatively recently. “She said, ‘You know, he’s so patient,'” Cruise recalled, referring to Kelce teaching her the game. “I said, ‘I’m sure he was.’ I think everybody would be very patient [with her].”

The conversation between the two megastars had sparked immediate speculation after lip reader Nicola Hickling told the Irish Star she believed Cruise was giving Swift blunt career advice. Hickling claimed Swift said something about “the structure of the entire infrastructure of the audience,” and alleged Cruise responded at one point: “You may not know it, but you do have a job.” Hickling also claimed the actor said, “I told her to stick to one and that it’s the last time.” Cruise’s Fallon interview directly contradicted that interpretation, framing Swift as the expert in their exchange rather than the one receiving guidance.

Cruise’s admiration for Swift extended well beyond her football knowledge. “[Now] she knows … she’s just bringing it,” he continued. “She’s funny. She’s got such a great sense of humor. A brilliant writer also, by the way. Brilliant musician and director. Very skilled.”

The “Top Gun” star also noted his long familiarity with Swift’s career, telling Fallon: “I’ve been following her since she was a kid.” He spoke warmly of Swift and Kelce as a couple, calling them “a beautiful couple and magical in their own right” along with “everybody there in that booth.”

Their discussion wasn’t limited to sports. Cruise mentioned they also talked about movies and music during the game.

The September 14 matchup at Arrowhead Stadium drew a notable celebrity crowd, with Swift and Cruise’s interaction becoming one of the most photographed moments of the evening. Swift has become a regular presence at Chiefs games since her relationship with Kelce became public in 2023, often seen in the team’s suite with friends and family.

Cruise used part of his Fallon appearance to discuss his upcoming film “Digger,” directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. In the movie, arriving in theaters October 2, Cruise plays a powerful oil tycoon responsible for an environmental catastrophe who attempts to convince the world he’s the hero who can prevent global destruction. The role features Cruise in a fat suit and aged appearance, a physical transformation he also addressed during the interview.
