Trans Killer Blames Transition for Stabbing Hiker 15 Times Because Victim Was ‘What I Want to Look Like’

Zion Teasley, 25, pleaded guilty to murdering Lauren Heike, 29, in a deal that spared the death penalty and guarantees life in prison.

The one-time Marine recruit entered the plea for the 2023 killing of the Phoenix beauty technician, who was found dead with 15 stab wounds near a barbed wire fence off a desert trail. Teasley had been on probation at the time of the murder after serving a year behind bars for armed robbery and other offenses.

Teasley’s gender identity struggles surfaced repeatedly in the investigation. Before the killing, the felon wrote in a diary about “battling with my gender identity and sexuality,” which Teasley believed conflicted with Christian faith, according to a 400-page police report obtained by ABC 15 last year.

“I want to live a life of serving god, but how can I with these and other sins in the way,” Teasley wrote.

“[I know] I am forgiven for my sins, but it’s still a lot of pressure and it’s hard to maintain a good Christian mindset 24/7.”

Teasley also expressed depression about seeing “beautiful” women while feeling stuck being “a man.”

During Teasley’s first police interview, the killer denied seeing Heike anywhere except on the news — then made a chilling remark to officers about the victim.

“That’s what I would want to look like,” Teasley told police.

Surveillance footage captured Teasley stalking Heike, a stranger, before chasing her down, killing her with a pocket knife, and jumping over a fence to escape. Investigators discovered DNA on Heike’s shoes that matched Teasley. Police arrested the killer days later at a home roughly a mile from the trail.

Teasley’s boss informed investigators that the killer had recently been fired for being “aggressive” toward female employees. The boss also reported that Teasley had stolen clothing matching what the killer wore during the attack.

Heike’s family endorsed the plea agreement, telling ABC 15 that avoiding a trial spared them further anguish.

“After 3½ incredibly long and painful years, our family supports the State’s decision to enter into a plea agreement in Lauren’s case. This means we will not have to endure a trial or sit in a courtroom and hear every painful detail of the crime that took Lauren from us,” the family said.

“While no sentence will ever bring Lauren back, we are relieved knowing that he will never be released,” they continued. “He will never again have the opportunity to harm another person or cause another family to experience the unimaginable grief and trauma that ours has endured.”

Teasley entered U.S. Marine Corps recruit training in March 2019 but left three months later without completing bootcamp. The military declined to release additional service details, citing privacy reasons.
