Harry Styles clashed with a persistent autograph seeker on a New York City street Wednesday, according to video.
The Grammy winner, 30, had been attempting to keep a low profile in a hoodie and baseball cap while listening to music through wired earbuds when the man began trailing him, the first clip shows. The autograph seeker repeatedly tried to get Styles’ attention, but the singer continued walking without acknowledging him.
The man then appeared to scream and taunt Styles, who initially kept his composure.
A second video captured a more heated phase of the encounter. The two men were seen yelling and pointing their fingers at each other, though the audio made their words unclear. At one point, a third man stepped between Styles and the autograph seeker, who was holding a copy of the singer’s “Fine Line” album, seemingly attempting to defuse the tension.
When the former One Direction member tried to walk away, the man continued following him, matching his stride before the video cut off.
The confrontation stands in contrast to Styles’ typically friendlier interactions with fans and autograph seekers around the city. The “Sign of the Times” crooner has been spotted frequently in New York in recent months, often walking from Brooklyn, where his fiancée Zoë Kravitz resides, to Madison Square Garden.
Styles has been spending ample time in the Big Apple amid his 30-night residency at MSG, which kicked off Aug. 26 and runs through Halloween. He announced the event in January as part of his “Together, Together” tour.
The residency has already produced several headline-making moments. On opening night, Styles delivered a surprise tribute to Dolly Parton. He also made a cheeky comment about ex Taylor Swift’s wedding and gave a touching 9/11 tribute during the run.
Despite his efforts to fly under the radar with hats and sunglasses, the singer’s presence in Manhattan has drawn steady attention. Wednesday’s encounter marked a rare tense moment in what has otherwise been a celebratory extended stay in the city.
The outlet has reached out to Styles’ reps for comment.
Styles’ next scheduled performance at Madison Square Garden is Thursday night.
