Cancer survivor shares a powerful message after running topless during the NYC Marathon

Lauren Spiezia has spoken out about the topless New York City Marathon run that made her an overnight viral sensation.

The New Jersey mother, 33, crossed the finish line of the 26.2-mile race bare-chested on November 3 as a deliberate statement about body positivity and breast cancer survival. She completed the grueling course after promising herself throughout treatment that she would one day run the famous marathon.

Spiezia was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer at 31, an age that led two doctors to initially dismiss her symptoms as too unlikely for concern. What followed was an exhaustive medical ordeal: 16 rounds of chemotherapy, six rounds of immunotherapy, a double mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, and the removal of her fallopian tubes after testing revealed a cancer gene mutation.

The physical demands of running without a sports bra drew curiosity from onlookers, but Spiezia explained that her mastectomy had severed the nerves in her chest, eliminating any pain from the lack of support. The decision to go topless was born from a deeply personal moment of vulnerability that she transformed into public advocacy.

“There was a moment after my mastectomy where I felt insecure about my scars on my chest, and I really hated that I allowed it to make me feel badly about myself when in fact they were just a sign of strength,” she told news.com.au.

“That’s when I had the idea about running it topless.”

Her running team raised approximately $50,000 USD for breast cancer research alongside her awareness campaign. The fundraising success accompanied a flood of social media commentary that ranged from enthusiastic support to outright condemnation.

“As a breast cancer survivor myself I love this so much!” one person wrote online.

Other supporters chimed in with “So inspiring” and “Free the nip.”

Critics pushed back hard on the public display. “This is a ridiculous way to support health, this is a friendly family event, and this is not the place to run topless,” an angry user commented. Another added: “It’s completely inappropriate to run topless at a family event.”

Some observers fixated on the practical mechanics, with one person sharing: “Good for her but the pain of no sports bra for that long, I could never haha.”

Spiezia framed her run as a deliberate movement rather than a stunt. “My goal was to give women and men going through treatment hope and courage to persevere, and make them feel less alone on the journey,” she explained.

“This was a movement about body positivity, advocacy, and empowering women, full stop.”

The marathon finish represented both a physical and psychological milestone for Spiezia, who refused to let post-surgical insecurity define her relationship with her own body. Her health crisis has since redirected her professional life entirely.

She launched LakLak Beauty, a non-toxic skincare brand, after struggling to find safe products during her chemotherapy regimen. The company emerged from her firsthand experience of how limited the market was for cancer patients seeking clean beauty alternatives.

Spiezia remains unapologetic about the mixed reception to her marathon appearance, standing by the run as a necessary intervention against the shame she believes society attaches to women’s bodies, particularly those marked by medical trauma.
