Aaron Rodgers says Shailene Woodley made a surprising request before they got married

Aaron Rodgers has accused ex-fiancée Shailene Woodley of asking to sleep with another man days after accepting his marriage proposal.

Rodgers, 42, made the claim during a recent appearance on the Not Just Football podcast on YouTube, where he reflected on the turbulent end of their 2020 engagement. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback told hosts that Woodley, 33, accepted his proposal in December 2020 before delivering a stunning request shortly afterward.

“She said yes. … A couple days after that she tells me, ‘Before we get married I gotta go f–k this guy’,” Rodgers said on the podcast. He did not name the man in question.

The engagement unraveled within months. Rodgers said Woodley “took off the ring” by March 2021, though he suggested she may have “felt like she was forced to make a decision.” He was unsparing in his assessment of her choices, adding that she “could have said no.”

The couple attempted reconciliation multiple times after ending their engagement, according to Rodgers, but those efforts collapsed. “There wasn’t even a relationship in 2022 to break off,” he stated. “She literally told me, ‘I don’t want to be with you,’ after we tried some reconciliation in 2021.”

Rodgers directed much of his frustration toward Woodley’s public comments about their split. In a 2024 interview with Outside magazine, the “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars” actress described their relationship as “not right” and referenced a “really awful, traumatic” incident from 2022. She spoke candidly about her emotional state during that period, saying she “felt like I lost my soul, my self, my happiness, my joy” and experienced “complete soul detachment.” Woodley called it the “lowest low of [her] life,” noting that she “knew I was depressed when I looked at a tree and felt nothing.”

Rodgers fired back at these characterizations during the podcast. “Shai, you left me, you took the ring off,” he said. “Her story is that I ruined her life and gave her crazy depression because I left her. … What are we talking about regarding me ruining your life?”

The quarterback broadened his criticism to include other exes who have spoken publicly about him. “The height of their fame was when they were with me,” he complained. “They get clicks when they say my name, just like the idiots on TV get clicks when they say my name because I’m a lightning rod.” He concluded with a blunt directive: “Move on with your life. Don’t mention me.”

Rodgers and Woodley’s relationship became public in February 2021, when reports emerged that they had begun dating in late 2020. News of their engagement followed within days. The rapid timeline from revelation to engagement to collapse marked one of the more closely watched celebrity pairings of that period, particularly given Rodgers’ status as an NFL MVP and Woodley’s rising film career.

Since the split, Rodgers has confirmed marriage to a woman named Brittani, whom he has called “the one that got away,” He said they originally dated in 2017, separated, and later reunited. Woodley has not publicly confirmed any current relationship.
