Apple’s newest iPhone software update introduces a major shift in how messages are handled, helping bring different phone platforms closer together.
iOS 26.5 rolled out to iPhones on Monday (May 11). Although a number of the tools arriving with the release are still labeled as ‘beta’, there’s plenty included for users to explore.
The headline change is the arrival of encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging, a move that significantly improves how conversations work between iPhone and Android devices.
Until now, texts exchanged across the two platforms typically weren’t protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning a provider could technically decrypt and access message contents.
With iOS 26.5, encryption is enabled automatically. iPhone users can tell it’s active by looking for the lock icon inside the Messages app, confirming that sent texts are protected.

The added security will apply to one-to-one chats with users on other devices. However, group conversations that include both Android and iPhone participants in the default messaging app won’t gain the same encryption benefits from this update.
It’s also important to note that the feature relies on carrier compatibility. Apple hasn’t yet published a full list of networks that currently support the encrypted RCS upgrade.
As many iPhone owners get ready to install iOS 26.5 to access the new messaging protections, some may also be wondering whether the update could temporarily affect battery performance.

After installing a major software update, iPhones often run a background process known as ‘indexing’.
This is when the device reorganizes and refreshes files behind the scenes, ensuring everything is properly aligned with the new version of iOS.
That background work can be demanding for a short time, and it may cause battery life to dip briefly while the phone completes those tasks.
Apple’s own support page states: “If you notice that your battery life has decreased after updating your iPhone, wait a few days and then check again.
“Even though you can use your iPhone immediately after an update, certain tasks related to the update continue in the background and might affect battery life and thermal performance.”
