A statue of Charlie Kirk was vandalized with red paint just days after its unveiling outside Turning Point USA headquarters.
The eight-foot memorial was installed in Phoenix on Friday, September 10, to mark one year since Kirk, 31, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University. Conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, which Kirk led, had also placed a sign beside the statue bearing his photo and the words: “May Charlie be received into the merciful arms of Jesus, our loving Savior.”
By early this week, the statue had been defaced with red paint across its torso and neck, along with what appeared to be an unhappy face painted on the chest. The accompanying sign was similarly damaged: the word “Jesus” had been crossed out, and a red X marked Kirk’s photograph.
Turning Point USA addressed the incident in a statement posted to social media, confirming the organization was cooperating with law enforcement. “We will restore the statue and replace the signs, but we are also reviewing the footage of the incident and are working with law enforcement to identify who did this and hold them accountable,” the group wrote.
The organization continued: “But vandalism like this is not funny, it’s diabolical. The incident happened in the middle of the night because evil never sleeps. Beyond spray painting on the neck and face, they made the intentional decision to cross out the name of Jesus on a nearby sign.” The post concluded with the biblical passage: “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.”
Kirk’s widow, Erika, amplified the statement on her own X timeline, framing the damage as another failed attempt to suppress her husband’s influence. “Charlie once said we should be building two statues for every statue that they tear down,” she wrote. “His instinct was always to build, not to destroy.”
She added: “They thought a bullet would silence my husband’s voice but it only made it louder. They think spray paint can obscure his legacy, but it will only spread it further. Every attempt to tear down what Charlie built makes us root deeper and work even harder.”
Erika Kirk also addressed the religious element of the vandalism directly. “And if you think crossing out the name of Jesus Christ will silence Christians, history has already proved you wrong,” she shared. “We know what it costs to stand firm for Christ and we will stand anyway. God will not be mocked.”
She concluded with a pledge of restoration and defiance: “We’ll put His name right back where it belongs, clean up the mess, restore Charlie’s statue, and keep building. We will never give up and never surrender.”
The vandalism comes as the criminal case against Kirk’s alleged killer advances through the Utah court system. Tyler Robinson, 23, has been charged with murder and pleaded not guilty. Utah judge Tony Graf recently ruled that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence to proceed to trial, leaving Robinson potentially facing the death penalty.
Following that ruling, the Kirk family issued a statement acknowledging the weight of the legal milestone. “Today’s decision, which comes nearly a year since Charlie was taken from us, marks an important step in our family’s pursuit of justice for him,” they said. “Every step in this process carries the weight of all that Charlie’s murder has taken from his family, especially his children who will grow up without their father.”
The family expressed gratitude for continued support and outlined their hopes for the proceedings ahead: “We are grateful to all who have continued to pray for us, support us, and stand with us through a year of unimaginable grief. As the next phase of the judicial process begins, our family remains united in our love for Charlie, our commitment to the pursuit of justice, and our prayer for a transparent and timely process.”
Kirk was shot on September 10, during his appearance at Utah Valley University. The attack, which occurred roughly one year before the statue’s unveiling, instantly made national headlines and prompted widespread reaction across political and media circles. Robinson was arrested and charged in connection with the killing, and the case has since moved through preliminary hearings toward trial.
Turning Point USA has indicated that the statue will be cleaned and returned to display, and that the damaged sign will be replaced.
