The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Wednesday that Eddie Murphy will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 80th Golden Globes.
This honorary award is a great honour for the comedian and actor. It will also add to the broadcast, which NBC will air on Tuesday, Jan. 10, with comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosting.
The show was absent for the last two years due to the scandal and backlash that tarnished the Globes. Eddie Murphy was nominated for the 2019 Golden Globe for “Dolemite is My Name,” which was his sixth Golden Globe nomination.
He is a well-deserving recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award and is sure to add a great deal of star power to the show.
The Golden Globes, which recently announced its nominations for 2021, is attempting to make a comeback after a Los Angeles Times investigation in early 2021 found that the press association had no Black members and enumerated a long history of ethical indiscretions. NBC had canceled the 2022 broadcast but has now signed a one-year deal with the Globes.
Leading the nominations for films are “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, while “Abbott Elementary” is the top TV nominee. Eddie Murphy, who has been nominated for a Globe six times before and won once, for his performance in 2006′s “Dreamgirls,” has been nominated again for best actor in a comedy or musical for 2019′s “Dolemite is My Name.”
Other previous recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which honors outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry, include Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, and Meryl Streep.
