Family Horrified After Finding Photos of Themselves on the Wall at Airbnb

An Airbnb stay in San Diego took an eerie turn after guests noticed what appeared to be a photo of themselves hanging on the wall.

Stories about hidden cameras in vacation rentals are unsettling enough, but this family was shocked by something even stranger: framed wall art that seemed to feature them.

The moment was shared in a viral TikTok clip, where a family films themselves looking around their San Diego rental and explains that “the weirdest thing happened” during their stay.

Aubrey Birrell said she and her sister were checking out the property when they paused at one particular photograph. At first, their dad joked that one of the people in the image resembled him.

After taking a closer look, the family realized it was not just a lookalike. The beach photo actually showed their dad, along with Aubrey’s siblings, from years earlier.

Pointing at the photograph, the TikToker revealed:

“This is my dad, that’s my sister, Libby, 10 years ago, and that’s Brady, my brother, 10 years ago. They are literally in the Airbnb picture.”

Her sister then said:

“We have those swimsuits, we are literally in the picture. We are on our Airbnb wall.”

Aubrey resolved:

“It’s crazy. This can’t be real. We think this is crazy.”

The clip quickly drew a flood of reactions online, with many viewers calling the discovery deeply unsettling.

One TikToker wrote:

“Literally sounds like the start of a horror movie.”

Another commented:

“Proof we live in a simulation,”

A third joked:

“I change it out for every new guest.”

Not everyone thought the explanation was paranormal. One viewer suggested the framed image may simply be the work of a known photographer, offering a far less creepy answer.

That would not be unusual in a vacation rental. Airbnb’s own host guidance encourages owners to remove personal items such as family photos when preparing a space, but decorative wall art can still be anything from a stock print to a licensed image or a photographer’s work. In other words, the family may have stumbled onto a piece of art that was never meant to be a portrait at all.

Another added:

“That means you’re on a lot more walls than you realize,”

The story also spread to other social media platforms, where people responded with unusual coincidence stories of their own.

One X user said:

“Bizarre! We once booked an Alaska cruise for our anniversary only later to discover that my business partner and his wife had booked the same cruise for theirs. It was fun. But, this story is stranger still.”

Another person wrote:

“So my gf and I recently got a house together. Prior to this, we had separate places. What do you think the odds are that the key to her apartment fit and unlocked the door to our new house as well as the key from the house fitting and unlocking the door to her apartment,”

A third wrote:

“The question I have is, if they didn’t book this Airbnb, would that image still be on the wall….”

And one final commenter said:

“I would have turned around and walked out the door.”

Many people would probably have done the same.
