Feds Say CIA Contractor Leaked Secrets to Left-Wing Journalist Girlfriend’s Obscure Blog and Now Faces 10 Years in Prison

A CIA contractor now faces up to a decade in federal prison after prosecutors accused him of funneling classified intelligence to his journalist girlfriend’s Substack blog.

Ian Brinksman, 42, allegedly exploited his top-secret security clearance to acquire sensitive reports unrelated to his duties — including intelligence on Israel — and passed them to Aida Chávez to boost her independent journalism career, according to the FBI affidavit. Brinksman worked first as a government agency employee, then as a private contractor systems developer for the same agency, before his arrest by the Justice Department.

The couple’s electronic trail proved extensive. Investigators documented more than 800 phone calls between Brinksman and Chávez in 2026, with Brinksman sometimes contacting her within minutes of accessing classified material, prosecutors said.

The case against Brinksman includes a Nov. 20, email to a friend where he described his romantic relationship and his involvement in Chávez’s new venture. “So yeah, I’m still laying low and trying to figure out what’s next (once the dust finally settles.) The lady I’ve been seeing is a journalist and recently went independent. So I’ve been helping her get that off the ground,” he wrote.

“Her venture focuses on foreign policy. So, I’m getting a surprising amount enrichment/fulfilment from working on that,” Brinksman added in the same message.

At least five articles published on Chávez’s Substack, Capital & Empire, align with the intelligence and dates specified in the FBI affidavit. One post, co-published with Drop Site News on Oct. 5, drew on a classified CIA report warning of potential civil war and state collapse in Israel amid conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. That story accumulated only 165 likes and 46 reposts on Substack. Another article detailed private discussions between Israel and the US regarding Jerusalem’s push for the Trump administration to target lead Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf — a story later confirmed by major publications.

Chávez, who previously worked at The Hill and contributed to the outlet before launching her independent newsletter, has taken her social media accounts private since the case emerged. She has not been charged with any crime and has not issued a public statement about Brinksman’s prosecution.

Before going private, Chávez had appeared in photos with prominent left-wing media figures including Hasan Piker and The Young Turks founder Cenk Uygur.
