Frankie Muniz opened up about his personal struggles in a raw Instagram post on Friday.
The “Malcolm in the Middle” star, 40, described the past month and a half as the darkest stretch he has faced. “The last 6 weeks of my life have been a nightmare I’m praying to wake up from,” he wrote on Instagram. “Everything [has] felt heavy, unclear, and like it was falling apart at the same time.”
Muniz, who recently returned to television in the “Malcolm in the Middle” revival series, did not specify what triggered the turmoil. He and his estranged wife, Paige Price, announced their divorce in July after what they called “10 beautiful years together.” The couple married in Phoenix, Arizona, in February 2020 and share 5-year-old son Mauz.
The actor framed his pain as a catalyst for transformation rather than a dead end. “I wouldn’t wish this season on anyone,” he wrote. Yet he called the “unexpected gift” of his struggles the fact that he’s “had nowhere to hide.”
“I’ve had time to sit with myself, do real self-reflection, and finally see the areas of my life that need work if I want to become a better version of me,” Muniz continued on Instagram. “Not the polished version I show the world … the actual one.”
He acknowledged hitting “rock bottom” but suggested the fall could fuel a future rise. “In five years, I believe I’ll look back at this exact low point and feel grateful for it, because the high I’ll be standing on then only exists because I went through this,” the actor wrote.
Muniz described his current mindset as one of construction rather than conclusion. “This isn’t the end of the story. It’s the part where I start doing the work … the uncomfortable, unglamorous, necessary work,” he shared. “I’m choosing to treat this season as the foundation, not the finish line.”
He extended a hand to others facing hardship. “If you’re in a low place right now too, you’re not broken. You’re being rebuilt. Let’s keep going!” Muniz wrote.
The emotional post comes two months after Muniz’s divorce announcement, which he originally shared on Instagram alongside a video of the family dancing in their living room. He deleted the post shortly after amid online criticism. In the since-deleted announcement, he had written that he and Price “grew in way that made us realize our relationship feels most natural and strong as a deep friendship and as co-parents,” He added, “We share an incredible son who remains the center of our world, and we’re both happier, stronger parents because of the love and growth we’ve shared.”
Price defended Muniz in the comments before the post disappeared. “Frankie, I am so sorry that you felt the need to delete an old funny video of our family because people are so cruel to you. This world is so f–ked,” she wrote at the time. She continued, “Divorce is bad, sure, it’s not like we’re excited about it, but we’re [two] adults who know how to be on the same team. I can’t believe people could scrutinize that.”
Muniz has largely stepped back from acting since his childhood fame, building a career as a professional stock car racing driver while making occasional screen appearances.
