George Clooney opened up about his sister’s final moments while accepting a top honor in Venice.
The “Ocean’s Eleven” star, 65, received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2026 Venice Film Festival last week and used the occasion to speak about Adelia “Ada” Zeidler, who died in December at 65 after a rapid battle with cancer. Clooney told the audience he was holding her hand when she passed, and that the experience left him determined to pursue joy above all else.
“I was with her when she died, and there was this feeling being with her, holding her hand when she died, understanding how brief all this is,” he said during the ceremony. He described how the moment collapsed time for him, making their childhood feel impossibly close and impossibly distant at once.
“Minutes ago that she and I were both kids together,” Clooney continued. “Minutes ago holding hands as little kids. And now, you know … time goes so fast. All of this, and so we need to find nothing but joy.”
The Kentucky-born actor pressed the point further, urging listeners to actively pursue happiness rather than waiting for it to arrive. “Find joy in the things that make [us] miserable,” he said. “You have to seek the joy out. You have to demand it, and you have to make sure that you demand it of yourself. That’s it.”
Clooney acknowledged his own uncertainty about what comes next, noting that “nobody [he knows] has yet to come back and tell [him] exactly how it works out.” He wrapped his remarks with a simple directive rooted in that unknown: “So I know in this life you have to seek joy and you have to try to find it for your family and your friends.”
The December announcement of Zeidler’s death came through an exclusive statement Clooney gave to People. “My sister, Ada, was my hero,” he wrote at the time. “She faced down cancer with courage and humor. I’ve never met anyone so brave,” He added that he and his wife, human rights attorney Amal Clooney, “will miss her terribly.”
Zeidler spent her career as an elementary art teacher and had been a National Merit Scholar in high school. She and her younger brother grew up together in Augusta, Kentucky, a small river town where their family roots ran deep. Unlike her globally famous sibling, she lived almost entirely outside public view, making only rare appearances at milestone events.
One such exception came in 2014, when she traveled to Venice to attend Clooney’s elaborate wedding to Amal at the Aman Canal Grande hotel. The ceremony drew a constellation of Hollywood and political figures, but Zeidler’s presence marked one of the few times she stepped into the frame of her brother’s public life.
Clooney’s bond with his sister had long been a touchstone he returned to in interviews. Back in 2015, he told “CBS This Morning” that the two remained tightly connected despite his demanding career and her preference for privacy. “My sister, I’m very close to,” he said then, a characterization that his recent remarks in Venice only reinforced.
The actor’s return to the same Italian city where he married, now to process grief rather than celebrate union, layered additional resonance onto his festival appearance. Venice has served as both backdrop and bookend to this chapter of his personal life.
Clooney is set to continue his festival circuit with upcoming promotional obligations for his latest directorial project.
