Gordon Ramsay is among the best-known chefs on the planet, but the fiery, profane character viewers see on shows like Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen doesn’t reflect how he is away from the cameras.
The 59-year-old, who is a father of six, puts a major focus on passing on everyday principles at home. Above all else, he says the lesson he prioritised with his kids is surprisingly simple: manners.
“The one thing I’ve taught them all, brilliantly, are manners.”
“The most important thing in life, but they cost zero.”
That emphasis has meant teaching habits like paying attention when someone is speaking, being mindful of other people’s space, and using basic courtesy so those around them feel respected—hardly the kind of upbringing that would encourage them to copy his TV outbursts.

The Masterchef star and his wife of nearly three decades, Tana Ramsay, share Megan, 28, Holly, 26, Jack, 26, Matilda, 24, Oscar, 7, and Jesse, 2.
Ramsay has also spoken about setting boundaries designed to keep his children grounded, even with their family’s profile and wealth. One key approach has been pushing them to find their own direction, rather than feeling pressured to follow him into the restaurant world.
So far, the older children have forged separate paths, including roles and ambitions spanning the Royal Marines, policing, fashion, and higher education.
He has additionally made it clear he doesn’t want his kids to be simply handed money. Under his current plans, he doesn’t intend to pass wealth straight to them, preferring instead to support practical milestones—such as contributing toward a house deposit—rather than providing a blank cheque.
Another well-known rule in the family is travel: he has said his children don’t fly first class because they haven’t yet earned that level of luxury, and he doesn’t want it to become an expectation.

Even though Ramsay encourages his children to choose their own careers, his daughter Tilly has developed a genuine passion for cooking and food.
While she’s appeared alongside her father in cooking content, she decided not to rely on him for formal training. Instead, she chose to study at culinary school in Ireland—something Ramsay has said makes him especially proud.
“I have to give her credit for that,” he said. “Finally, one out of six wants to be a chef, which has made my entire f—ing year.”
