Vanessa Bautista’s family released a heartbreaking obituary honoring the 24-year-old mother of two after her body was pulled from a sunken Jeep in a Michigan river.
Bautista, 24, and Alexa Navarro, 23, both of South Bend, Indiana, were discovered dead on Tuesday night when the submerged vehicle was recovered from the St. Joseph River in Niles, Michigan. The pair had been reported missing that same Sunday, setting off a desperate search in the southwestern Michigan city near the Indiana border.
“Vanessa’s greatest joy in life was being a mother. Her sons were her entire world, and she loved them with all her heart. She was devoted to making sure they were cared for, happy, and never went without,” her family wrote in the obituary.
The tribute painted Bautista as a fiercely protective parent who made sacrifices without hesitation. “She was a loving, protective, and devoted mother who would always find a way to make things happen for her boys. The love she had for Jaire and Jessiah was unconditional, and they will forever carry the love she gave them,” the family continued.
Beyond her role as a mother, Bautista was remembered for her warmth and what relatives called her “beautiful soul.” She had been looking forward to a family milestone in the days before her death.
“She would tease her sister Michelle, telling her to ‘hold it in’ and not let the baby be born on her birthday,” the obituary read, noting her birthday as Sept. 9 — just days before the fatal incident. The family described her as “eagerly anticipating” the arrival of her niece.
The Jeep is believed to have plunged over an embankment and dropped roughly 70 feet into the river around 4 a.m. Sunday morning, according to Niles Police Chief James Millin. The cause of death for both women remains unknown pending further investigation.
Authorities have been examining whether Bautista and Navarro were “chased” or “followed” on the night they vanished, though no conclusions have been announced. The circumstances surrounding how the vehicle left the roadway and entered the water are still under active investigation.
Bautista’s obituary stands as the family’s public testament to a young life cut short, emphasizing the devotion she showed to her two sons above all else. The loss has left two young boys without their mother and a family grappling with an unexpected tragedy on the cusp of what should have been a celebratory week.
