Olesya Rulin has traded Hollywood for rural Russia and wellness content creation.
The 38-year-old actress, who played shy pianist Kelsi Nielsen in all three High School Musical films from 2006 to 2008, now runs a Substack and Instagram presence called “The Village Daughter” focused on a historic Russian village located between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Rulin, who was born in Soviet Russia and moved to the United States at age eight, has built her new platform around documenting traditional village life and promoting wellness products.
Rulin’s pivot comes after more than a decade of scattered acting work following the franchise’s conclusion. She logged credits on CSI: Miami, The Mentalist, the ABC Family series Greek, and the PlayStation Network superhero drama Powers. Her more recent appearances included a 2018 TV movie Devious Nanny and a 2019 episode of SEAL Team. While several of her High School Musical co-stars became major stars — Zac Efron, 37, moved into leading film roles, while Vanessa Hudgens, 36, built a music and Netflix holiday-movie empire — Rulin’s screen presence gradually diminished.
The actress has also undergone significant personal changes. She married Joseph Noel Pauline and the couple welcomed a daughter, Ondine Michelle Pauline, in 2022. Rulin announced the birth on Instagram with an extended message of gratitude.
“Ondine Michelle Pauline. Thank you for choosing @joeypauline and I to be your parents,” Rulin wrote on Instagram. “You have an army of a family that’s been waiting for you. Thank you to all of the life lessons that have brought us to a place where we can welcome you with love in our hearts, peace in our minds, and gratitude in our souls.”
Rulin’s “The Village Daughter” project centers on a village founded in 1545, according to a promotional film she released. Though she personally resides in a small town near Yosemite National Park in California, her content draws from the Russian village, where she documents what she describes as a fading way of life. In the short film introducing the project, Rulin invited viewers to “come with me and discover a way of life most have forgotten.”
The Substack and Instagram presence also serves as a platform for wellness products and an ambitious environmental initiative. The website outlines plans to restore the village site to a 450-acre nature reserve, connecting her content creation to conservation efforts.
In the viral moment that defined her early career, Rulin appeared as Kelsi Nielsen, the soft-spoken East High School composer who created the music for Troy and Gabriella’s pivotal auditions and the stage productions that drove the plot. The Disney Channel Original Movie became a surprise phenomenon when it premiered in January 2006, drawing 7.7 million viewers in its first broadcast and spawning two sequels, including the 2008 theatrical release High School Musical 3: Senior Year. The franchise turned its young cast into household names and launched multiple entertainment careers, though Rulin’s path ultimately diverged sharply from the mainstream spotlight her co-stars continued to pursue.
