Gabriella Querino’s body was recovered from a Venice lagoon Tuesday, four days after the boating collision that already claimed her husband Sean Michieli’s life.
The 26-year-old bride and Michieli, 25, had been married only three months when their vessel struck a water taxi and sank during what was described as a fishing trip. Michieli’s body was pulled from the water Saturday morning. Querino’s remains were discovered roughly a mile from that location, according to Il Giornale D’Italia.
A nautical homicide investigation is now active, and Querino’s relatives are openly questioning the official narrative. “There are too many silences and things that don’t add up,” the family stated, pointing to troubling details surrounding the couple’s final hours together.
The most significant of those details involves a heated dispute the night before the crash. Querino’s family revealed that the couple engaged in what they called a “serious argument,” and the young bride informed them she was preparing to leave the marriage.
The conflict appeared to resolve itself, at least superficially. Querino texted her mother, Gisele Elorriaga, who lives in Brazil, to indicate the disagreement had blown over and that the couple was going out to dinner. “I’ll tell you tomorrow,” the message reportedly read.
That text itself has become a focal point for family suspicions. Querino’s relatives emphasized that she detested texting as a mode of communication and maintained a daily video-calling habit with her mother regardless of circumstances. “She video-called every day, no matter what happened,” they said. “She hated communicating via texts, she never did.”
Elorriaga landed in Italy on Tuesday night, hours after her daughter’s body was found. “I lost two children,” she told Gazzettino, referring to both Querino and Michieli.
Michieli had been hospitalized with serious injuries after being pulled from the water Saturday but did not survive. His cause of death remains pending, with an autopsy scheduled for next week.
Chantal Michieli, Sean’s sister, addressed the loss in an online post. “I would give anything to have just one more minute with you,” she wrote.
Italian authorities are actively seeking to interview two American tourists who were passengers on the water taxi at the moment of impact. Their testimony could prove critical to understanding how the collision occurred and whether any operational violations contributed to the double fatality.
Querino had relocated to Italy approximately two years before her death, building a life that led to her marriage with Michieli, a local fisherman. The couple’s brief union ended in waters near one of the world’s most visited cities, leaving two families on separate continents grasping for answers.
