A mysterious suited figure shadowboxing on Paris streets has drawn millions of views, but fans are learning the viral star is not human at all.
The Instagram account Jean Philanthrope has exploded across social media, with one video alone notching 35.7 million views. The character, a man in tweed suits and bow ties with aggressively bleached blonde hair in a bob cut and a matching twirly moustache, appears at road junctions, cafés, and landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, often eating oysters or croissants before breaking into boxing moves.
The name itself carried a hidden hint. “Philanthrope” combines the Ancient Greek “phil-” for love with “anthropos” for humanity, meaning lover of humans — the root of “philanthropist.” The irony, users now realize, is that the character holds no love for humanity because he was never part of it.
The figure is entirely AI-generated and linked to a meme coin, a cryptocurrency built around instantly recognizable characters that drive social media attention and, theoretically, price spikes. The format has precedent: Dogecoin began as a joke before becoming widely known, though such currencies typically prove highly unstable.
The Jean Philanthrope character has spawned hundreds of videos across other accounts and even a apparent rival. A similar figure called Archibald Brown, presented as an English counterpart, has appeared on Instagram in an identical format — shadowboxing in public locations.
Commenters have flooded social media with comparisons to Lord Farquaad from Shrek and Wallace and Gromit characters, citing the distinctive hair. Many voiced frustration at discovering the deception.
