Sandra Bullock has broken her long silence on her ex-husband Jesse James’ 2010 cheating scandal, calling the period “a really dark time in my life” in a candid new interview with Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine published Tuesday.
The 60-year-old Oscar winner spoke with Aniston about the emotional toll of the public breakup while she was secretly raising her newborn son, Louis, whom she had adopted in late 2009. Bullock, who had kept the infant hidden from paparazzi, described the elaborate measures she took to protect him when media attention exploded.
“I was just cleaning out the closet, and I found these hockey bags for stuffing clothes in for travel,” Bullock recalled. “When the poop hit the fan for me … we know what that is, I realized I had to get out of the house because the paparazzi were going to descend, and no one knew I had a newborn.”
“I put him in his car carrier, put it in the hockey bag and zipped the hockey bag around him,” she continued. “Then I carried the hockey bag to the car, as though I was just carrying any random hockey bag.”
Bullock joked that the stunt nearly got her in trouble with authorities, saying she didn’t want “Child Protective Services … [to] come after” her. She has since adopted a second child, daughter Laila, and quipped that raising both children in the public eye has required “operat[ing] like the CIA.”
The actress found unexpected parallels between her personal crisis and her 2011 film “Gravity,” in which she played an astronaut stranded alone in space. Filming with George Clooney became “meaningful,” she explained, because the role “was paralleling” her actual circumstances.
“I was in a locked box by myself with no one to talk to for nine hours a day … doing a lot of thinking,” she said of the shoot. She described the experience as “trying to grieve” the end of her marriage while maintaining her responsibilities as a new mother.
Bullock and James, 57, had married in July 2005 after one year together. The “Monster Garage” host later entered a treatment facility following their split and issued a public apology at the time. In 2017, he brushed off the scandal to the outlet, saying, “Yeah, I did cheat on my wife, yeah, I stood up and took accountability for it and apologized. And that’s end of story. … It’s part of life.”
While James went on to marry former adult film star Bonnie Rotten, Bullock began a relationship with photographer Bryan Randall in 2015. Randall died in August 2023 at 57 after a private battle with ALS.
Bullock noted that her privacy was breached again recently, though she did not provide specifics. “It broke my heart,” she said.
The “Practical Magic 2” star also shared her anxieties about her children growing older and eventually leaving home. “Unless the kids are with me, I’m lost, and I have to figure that out,” she admitted. “I keep saying, ‘We’ll keep this house. I’ll do the laundry. You can stay here.'”
She expressed hope that her children won’t “really leave” despite their advancing ages, adding, “If you’re surrounded by good people, you’ll be fine. But if people near you mean you harm, no matter how covert you are and how much pre-planning you do, your privacy is information that brings them cash.”
The cheating scandal erupted in March 2010 when multiple women came forward alleging affairs with James during his marriage to Bullock. The revelations surfaced just weeks after Bullock won her first Academy Award for “The Blind Side,” turning what should have been a career peak into a personal nightmare. She filed for divorce that April and finalized it in June 2010, proceeding with the adoption of Louis as a single mother.
