Kate Hudson is airing fresh doubts about ever making it down the aisle.
The “Almost Famous” actress, 47, told listeners of her “Sibling Revelry” podcast on Tuesday that the sheer size of her family and the price tag of a ceremony are major reasons she remains unmarried five years after fiancé Danny Fujikawa proposed. Hudson made the comments during an episode that welcomed sisters Joey King, 27, and Hunter King, 32, as guests.
Joey and Hunter had recently returned from their own weddings overseas — Joey married Steven Piet in Spain in September 2023, while Hunter wed Chris Copier in Tuscany, Italy, this June. Their brother Oliver Hudson, 50, who co-hosts the podcast, noted that destination nuptials can “weed out a ton of people.”
“I still am not married. I’m just engaged, and I keep thinking about [the] wedding, you know? Like, what are we going to do?” Kate said.
She continued, “And then every time we start thinking about it, like, who we have to invite, Danny’s like, ‘I just want a small wedding.’ I’m like, ‘Our family alone is, like, 50 people.'”
After Joey explained that she and her sister have a “small family,” Kate joked that there are “a million” kids, aunts, uncles and cousins in hers. Oliver then recalled his own June 2006 wedding to wife Erinn Hudson in Mexico, which he described as “controversial” after he barred the husbands of Erinn’s high school friends from attending.
“I did not want to meet anyone at my wedding for the first time,” he said.
Joey admitted that the flowers at her wedding came with a hefty price tag, which prompted Kate to cite cost as another barrier.
“That’s part of why I don’t want to get married. I’m like, it’s too expensive,” Kate said. “I just want, like, hors d’oeuvres. I want to do, like, chips and salsa.”
Hudson announced her engagement to Fujikawa in September 2021, sharing a selfie of the two atop a mountain while displaying her ring. She captioned the Instagram post, “Let’s go! 👰♀️💒🤵🏻♂️.” The couple began dating in December 2016 and welcomed daughter Rani Rose Hudson Fujikawa in October 2018. Kate is also mother to son Ryder Russell Robinson, 21, with ex-husband Chris Robinson, and son Bingham Hawn Bellamy, 14, with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy.
Her hesitation about marriage has deepened over time. In November 2022, she told Entertainment Tonight that she and Fujikawa were “in no hurry” to exchange vows, explaining that they had other priorities at the time.
“I love that man … But the last thing we are doing right now during the holidays is planning anything but the holidays,” she said.
More than a year into their engagement, Kate said in February 2023 that “right now, planning a wedding feels insane,” though she said she was excited to eventually do so. She had been going “back and forth” between a small or large ceremony, recalling that her first wedding to Robinson was “so small,” and considering a traditional Japanese wedding to “honor” Fujikawa and their daughter’s heritage.
The “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” star also said it would “totally be a destination wedding,” adding, “It will be such an adventure that people will really want to have to come to show up. To me, those are always the most fun weddings. Like, if you really want to be there, you’ll be there.”
Her stance has only softened further since. During an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show” in March 2025, Kate admitted she may never marry Fujikawa, saying that she liked the idea of “being engaged forever.”
She added, “The contractual thing is tough for me. I like my freedom … I like the concept of freedom.”
Hudson’s latest podcast remarks suggest that freedom remains her priority, with chips and salsa sounding more appealing than a traditional reception.
