Bachelor Alum Melissa Rycroft Speaks Out After Second DWI Arrest and Reveals Mental Health Struggles

Melissa Rycroft has broken her silence after her second DWI arrest in just over a year.

The former “Bachelor” contestant, 43, posted a lengthy statement to Instagram on Tuesday addressing the incident and revealing a private mental health battle she said has been building for years. Rycroft, who lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with her husband Tye Strickland and their three children, was taken into custody by Southlake police last week after allegedly hitting a stopped ambulance on Halloween night and leaving the scene.

“First, please know how deeply ashamed and embarrassed I am, especially knowing how much this has affected my friends and family,” she wrote on Instagram Tuesday.

“I want to share something personal, and to be honest, I am very ashamed to share it, but I can’t hide it anymore,” Rycroft added. “I’ve been struggling with my mental health for quite some time now. It has completely overwhelmed me.”

The “Dancing With the Stars” alum said she has “tried to hide” what she’s been going through by “putting on a smile.”

“But behind the scenes, things have been much harder than anyone realized or that I have let on, even to my family,” she penned.

The Texas native’s latest arrest came with multiple charges. Authorities in Southlake, an affluent suburb northwest of Dallas, booked her on driving while intoxicated, an accident involving damage exceeding $200, and driving with an invalid license. The collision with the ambulance occurred on October 31, and police said she fled the scene afterward.

This was not Rycroft’s first run-in with law enforcement over impaired driving. She was initially arrested in September 2025 after crashing her Cadillac Escalade into a tree in the same city. She pleaded guilty in August and received a sentence of 20 months probation, a term she had barely begun when the Halloween incident occurred.

Rycroft’s public statement marked a stark departure from the polished persona she maintained through two stints on “Dancing With the Stars” and her earlier reality television fame. She first appeared on the 13th season of “The Bachelor” in 2009, accepting a proposal from Jason Mesnick before he famously reversed course and ended their engagement to pursue runner-up Molly Malaney. Later that same year, Rycroft joined the cast of “Dancing With the Stars,” returning in 2012 to win the all-star season.

“No excuses at all, but I’m finally admitting that I need help. I’ve fought this for a long time on my own, and it’s time to admit that I can’t do it anymore,” Rycroft shared on Instagram.

The former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader said she is now getting “professional care.”

“This is so hard to say and the shame is still very much there, but I’m ready to feel like myself again, for me and for my family. They have stood by me through all of this, and they deserve honesty. They deserve me at my best,” she wrote.

Rycroft concluded her statement by asking her fans to give her some “grace” as she focuses on “trying to get healthy.”

Her marriage to Strickland, a former insurance agent, has been documented in the public eye before. The couple starred together in the 2010 CMT reality series “Melissa & Tye,” which followed their lives as newlyweds. They have since built a family of five in the Dallas area, a life Rycroft now says she is fighting to preserve and improve through treatment.

The back-to-back DWI arrests have drawn renewed attention to Rycroft’s public image, once defined by the sympathetic narrative of being jilted on national television and the triumphant arc of her “Dancing With the Stars” all-star victory. Her Tuesday statement attempted to reframe the conversation around her legal troubles as symptoms of an untreated condition rather than isolated lapses in judgment.

Rycroft did not specify what form her professional care would take, nor did she indicate whether she would address the pending charges through additional legal proceedings beyond her existing probation.
