Melania Trump’s team has publicly defended aide Natalie Harp against mounting media speculation about her relationship with the president.
Marc Beckman, the First Lady’s representative, sat down with interviewer Stella Inger Escobedo to push back against what he framed as baseless gossip. Beckman did not hold back in his assessment of the coverage. “The liberal media is ridiculous,” he said. “They don’t know anything about the first lady’s personal and private life. They don’t even take the time to put us on air to cover these incredible achievements that our first lady has accomplished.”
Harp, 35, has served as one of Donald Trump’s longest-standing and most devoted aides, earning the nickname “human printer” for her habit of keeping a laptop and printer close at hand during work. She has typically operated behind the scenes, but her profile rose sharply after Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff named her in a floor speech last week.
Ossoff told colleagues that Trump “wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie.” Pressed later on MSNBC’s The Briefing about his specific meaning, the senator avoided repeating Harp’s name directly. Instead, he accused Trump of retreating “into this bubble of West Wing aides who are his security blanket to make him feel good about himself.” The remark appeared to cast Harp as one of those so-called security blankets.
The outlet reporter Maggie Haberman, whose coverage Trump has repeatedly attacked, amplified the narrative. Haberman said Harp carries another nickname among some observers: “binkie,” suggesting she functions as a comfort object for the president.
Beckman fired back at both the political and journalistic scrutiny. “What they need to do is look in the mirror because they’re all attacking this hardworking, very talented, very intelligent person in Natalie Harp,” he continued. “And they’re obsessed with the gossip with the first family. And I can tell you firsthand that it’s time for them to become journalists and stop looking at the gossip.”
He drove the point further. “The media doesn’t know about the first lady’s private life. Period. The media doesn’t know about the first family’s life. Period,” Beckman added. “And what they do is they harp on the issues of gossip rather than going ahead and covering the substantial achievements that this first lady and the president also have conducted during this past year and a half.”
The pushback from Melania Trump’s camp comes as financial disclosures reveal fresh details about Harp’s standing in the president’s inner circle. The Trump administration recently released records showing the president gave cash gifts to four White House staffers, with Harp receiving $45,000.
A White House official explained the payment to the BBC. “He has a longstanding practice of giving Christmas gifts to people in his orbit, including at times employees and aides, both in government and in his time in the private sector,” the official said. The source added: “The gifts at issue here have nothing to do with any of these individuals’ official government duties, and are entirely permissible under relevant legal and ethical standards.”
