Melania Trump’s limited public schedule has drawn renewed attention, with one PR specialist offering an explanation for why she is so seldom seen alongside her husband.
Compared with previous First Ladies, her visibility has been notably lower. During her years in the role, Michelle Obama regularly made well over 100 public appearances annually, while Melania’s total appears to be far smaller. Even so, the First Lady has still made a handful of notable appearances in recent months, including a White House event in June tied to her “Fostering the Future” initiative, a Presidential AI Challenge appearance, and the Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall.
Speaking on The Daily Beast’s Inside Trump’s Head podcast, journalist Joanna Coles said Melania has made only a modest number of appearances so far this year.
“We’ve seen her, I think, three times this month at UFC at the fireworks. And she was there with Barron at the World Cup final on Sunday.”
Melania did attend last weekend’s World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but the outing stood out precisely because she is so rarely seen in public. She was also photographed with the president at the White House’s July 4 celebration and earlier this summer at other official events, underscoring that her public presence has been selective rather than nonexistent.
Coles went as far as to call her a “vanishing act,” pointing to her absence from Donald Trump Jr’s wedding and from the president’s trip to China.
Publicist Dylan Thomas Cotter suggested her reduced profile could be intentional, arguing that she may be keeping some distance from Trump in the public eye.
“The public, in a first for the United States, is witnessing a First Lady who is strategically positioning and publicizing herself while also distancing herself from the very man tasked with governing this country.
“That’s an interesting divergence from the historically dated patriarchal PR pattern of ‘stand by your man’ that was followed by many a First Lady throughout the course of this nation’s history.”
Cotter also argued that broader image management may be shaping the administration’s public presentation.
“All that said, there’s quite a bit of power at play within any political administration, and in particular for this administration, the focus does appear outwardly to be more on personal PR and personal business ventures and enrichment than on the dedication to and efficacy of providing consistent high-level public service.
“The First Lady may or may not be forced to take a step back by her partner. If she does, it’ll only reinforce the potential of public perception that her partner, who holds one of the most powerful offices in the world, may very well be intimidated by the potential of AFAB people outshining him as we’ve also seen reflected by the many female journalists.”
After her appearance at the World Cup final, social media was also flooded with strange claims suggesting that a “fake Melania” had attended in her place.
The White House has been approached for comment.
